Fundraising Blues

Honestly, fundraising sucks. Especially when 100% of the funds are needed and one doesn’t have enough money to match people’s donations.

Just to apply to grad schools I did a hectic two month online fundraiser and successfully raised $900 – only to see a percent of it go to Paypal fees and then still running overbudget because I underestimated the costs of creating a quality recording. Ultimately, 5 out of the 5 schools I raised money to apply to rejected me and I ended up paying for UCSB’s application out of pocket – thank God they accepted me.

Now for a month-long summer program (Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival) that will boost my stage experience and allow me to learn more roles and work with renowned faculty, I am scrambling to raise enough money for the deposit, airfare, and tuition – all within the month.

So I’ve been holding fundraising dinners and they have been extremely successful and delicious (yay for tasting Central Coast and German Rieslings alongside spicy zucchini, adobo, and Thai beef kabobs!) but last night it hit me:

Besides needing to raise at least $1500 for tuition and airfare, I also need to cover my bills while I’m gone in July and I’ll somehow have to find spending money.

That’s why I’ve got the fundraising blues.

In the end everything will work out because it always works out for the best. I just hate that ball of anxiety money plants in my stomach. No matter how much I weed it out and earn enough to be stable, it creeps back in and digs its roots deeper.

Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival

So after lots and lots of deliberation, I’ve decided to go to the Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival for their summer training program instead of Music Theater Bavaria. It was a difficult decision for me because my heart was torn between two sets of amazing faculty, amazing opportunities, and being so blessed to be stuck in this position. Ultimately, we decided to let my voice cook for a little more before I head off to Germany and sing for German agents. And the faculty at HPAF are amazing – Brent McMunn from USC! – plus two roles in Poppea and Gianni Schicchi!

Now I need to fundraise for the rest of the airfare – it’s much more expensive than I anticipated because it’s so last minute! Here’s what I need:

Airfare – $1,000 (normally it costs $400-500 roundtrip but because it’s last minute it’s up to $480 one way!)

Tuition – $1000 (tuition is $3325, they gave me a $375 scholarship, my aunt is giving me $2000)

I’ve been hosting fundraising dinners at my home and have at least raised $300. Please email me if you know me personally and would like to join a dinner. The next one is May 15!

Masters & Bavaria

Lots of good news in April! Thanks to everyone for always supporting this big dreamer - I have officially been accepted into Univ. of California, Santa Barbara for a Masters in Music this Fall!

Secondly, I got into Music Theater Bavaria – a month long summer program in Oberaudorf, Germany!

To celebrate, I sang Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and “Quando m’en vo soletta” from Puccini’s La Bohème at Tuesday Night Cafe in Little Tokyo! (Photos here)

Now the challenge is to raise enough money to fly to Germany and pay for tuition. My voice has grown dramatically over the past few years and I think a one month intensive in Germany ought to shape it up! Help me raise funds by:

1. Donating through Paypal (please keep in mind they charge a 2.9% +$.30 fee!)

2. Donating frequent flyer miles

Hopefully I’ll hear back from MTB soon with scholarship information. Once I know how much I need to raise, I’ll set up an online donation system and we’ll get rolling!
